Personality

{+Bright} {-Absentminded} {+Creative} {-Dreamy} {+Clever} {-Impressionable}

+ Bright Like his name implies, Brightpaw is very openly optimistic about all of his and his clan’s endeavors. While he may not hold any ill will towards the rest of the clans, he doesn’t question his leader’s hungry motives, as he believes that his decisions will benefit all cats involved in the end...right? No matter what, however, Bightpaw has a very positive outlook on each day and always has a cheery attitude about him, which can either brighten his clanmates’ day or annoy them to bits, depending on the cat.

- Absentminded Although it’s not intentional, this cat has a tendency to often become distracted from the tasks assigned to him, and has trouble focusing on directions, which often leads him into trouble. This trait even affects Brightpaw’s speech—it’s not rare to hear the tom begin one thought and trail off onto another in the very same sentence, which may confuse most cats that speak to him. Very often, Brightpaw causes messes in the medicine den as well; any clutter you see was no doubt caused by the feline himself. However, he makes up for his scatter-brained nature by keeping a determined face, and it can’t be questioned that he does a fantastic job when he concentrates…even if it takes him a couple of times.

+ Creative Even though the apprentice is very forgetful, Brightpaw is very imaginative and thoughtful. Often, he will come up with various new combinations of herbs and remedies for different ailments, and he often comes up with many inventive ideas to make clan life in general easier. While some of his ideas may be a little eccentric, most turn out to be very useful.

- Dreamy Brightpaw is a big daydreamer. In fact, much of his forgetfulness and lack of attention is due to his imagination running wild, and it’s not rare to see the cat staring off into space in the midst of his fantasizing. Even when you try to interrupt him, the tom only half listens, his mind wandering the whole time. Typically, this could cause other cats to get irritated with him, as he often asks them to repeat what they said numerous times before he completely understands.

+ Clever Despite his difficulty at paying attention, Brightpaw is everything you could ask for from an apprentice: diligent, hard-working, respectful, talented, and also intelligent to boot. The cat finds learning and committing things to memory easy (when he pays attention, that is) and he often notices the little details about things that most cats don’t. While this comes in handy when being a medicine apprentice with learning all of the numerous herbs and remedies he’s responsible for, it also is useful at gatherings, as he can perceive the little details about the other clans’ conditions despite any info that the other leaders give out. However, this skill is many times wasted, as Brightpaw’s head is too high up in the clouds regardless to keep track of what he sees.

- Impressionable While this feline is capable of holding his own opinion, it cannot be doubted that it is affected by the opinions of others. The apprentice always cares about what every cat thinks about him, and if he knows that you don’t like him, he’ll work determinedly to change that. Brightpaw very often takes a cat’s first word as the truth, and he never questions any cat’s motives, no matter how shady they are. He figures that if he trusts everyone else, they’ll trust him! Additionally, Brightpaw tends to often be influenced by the cats he cares about and admires, enough for him to be labeled as a ‘copycat’. It’s not exactly intentional; he just feels as though if he has the same traits as those that are well-liked in the clan, he’ll be respected as well, despite his bumbling personality.

History

I. [ Sparked ]

Clan-born warriors of Barkclan, Brightpaw’s parents, Birchfur and Appleheart, were the classic example of warrior romance; they trained together as apprentices, fell in love, and devoted their lives to each other and their clan equally as warriors. That is, of course, until the kits arrived. There were three of them, originally: the first, a bright ginger, like her father, the second, calico like his mother, and third, a male that was a mix of the two. However, the birth of the kits wasn’t as easy going as the pair hoped –the kitting happened earlier than it was supposed to – and all three kittens were born weak and small, much to their despair. It was expected that none of them were to survive the night, and unfortunately, the first two kittens did not. Both parents were distraught, but the loss only made them more determined to save their remaining kit.

The outcome of their special care was well worth the effort, as their kit grew stronger and livelier with each passing day. In fact, the kit was so good-natured and friendly that the couple named him Brightkit, and the kit flourished in the clan. Birchfur, his father, wanted Brightkit to follow in his footsteps and become a dedicated warrior. Often, he would be seen teaching Brightkit basic battle moves in hopes that his son would get a head start in his apprentice training. To his dismay, Brightkit never seemed to have much of an interest in any of it, and yet this only encouraged his father to be more aggressive with the kitten. Because of this, Brightkit never got to have much of a normal kithood, and he grew to resent his father’s urging, much to Birchfur’s confusion.

II. [ Ignited ]

Eventually, the kit took to hiding from his father whenever he wasn’t on patrol, and one day while looking for a new hiding place, the kitten discovered the medicine cat den. As his parents were both overprotective of their only kit, Brightkit never got to explore the dens as most other kits did, and his new discovery piqued his curiosity. The scent of herbs intrigued him, for once, Brightkit finally felt interested in something. While his mother found him soon after, the kit returned as soon as he could, whenever he could, and took to pestering the medicine cat about each herb and their uses, as well as all the responsibilities that Elkshade had. Brightkit couldn’t explain it, but the thought of becoming a medicine cat himself excited him! Saving his clanmates’ lives and communing with Starclan sounded much more interesting than spraying borders, hunting animals, and meeting other clans with tooth and claws in battle. However, afraid to hurt his father’s feelings, the kit kept his hidden passion to himself.

When the time finally came for Brightkit to become an apprentice, he gathered all of his courage and confessed his feelings to Appleheart, his mother. While she was overjoyed that her son finally found a calling of his own, her mate felt the exact opposite when he found out. Brightkit had so much potential—why was he going to waste it all on playing with plants and fantasies of talking to starry cats? In the end, it was Brightkit who got what he wanted, though not without creating a rift between him and his father.

III. [ Burnout ]

For the first few moons, Brightkit—now Brightpaw – did wonderfully in his training, despite what his father thought. He learned quickly, despite his dreamy nature, and he even had a head start from all of his previous time spent with Elkshade as a kit, which was ironically thanks to his father pressuring him to do the exact opposite. All was well, and if there was any bad side to Brightpaw’s new position, it was that Birchfur paid no attention to his son except for a few hostile hisses here and there. However, Applefur’s abundance of love was enough to make up for it, and Brightpaw found that he was happy in his apprenticeship. That is, until the fire came.

Brightpaw wasn’t sure what time it was when he woke up to the sound of crackling wood and the rich, choking smell of smoke and ash. He wasn’t even sure where his mentor was, as all he could see and hear was the sound of panicking cats, the roaring fire and the opaque smoke that blanketed the camp. Instead of rushing out to safety like the other cats, he instead went deeper into the heat, searching for his parents and his mentor, calling out with a raspy voice in desperation as he trekked his way around the flames in search for them. Certain that his cries would be drowned out by the raucous mesh of sounds, he began to lose hope, and to make it worse, the path that he took was now obscured by smoke and fire—he was going to die – when Webstar, his clan’s very own leader, seemingly came out of nowhere and saved his life by bundling him out of camp, making him a hero in Brightpaw’s eyes. Unfortunately, the same didn’t go for his parents, both of whom died in the inferno.

[ Example ]

- Rp with Mackoolzie
Whimper smiled in satisfaction when he heard the soft jingle of the keys, and he tried to stretch out his arms as much as he could toward Azlen to make it a little easier to unlock the handcuffs, though it was more than a little painful to do so—and even more as the ‘cuffs scraped against his charred and infected skin. Letting out a little hiss, the cat did his best to hide his pained expression from his rescuer as he finally got the blindfold off of him. Blinking in the sudden light, he felt uncharacteristic self-consciousness as he looked down at his mangled state for a moment. There were too many awful injuries to take stock of, and he noted that along with the fact that there was places where he could visibly see his broken bones, his fur was dyed almost completely scarlet—soaked in his own blood, he thought with a worried scowl. All of this investigation was done in one glance, and his pained expression immediately softened when he looked back up at Azlen, nodding silently. He knew that normally, Azlen would easily be able to lift him as if he was just a stack of papers, but he was being extra-careful in light of his boss’s mangled condition. Even with the care, though, Whimper couldn’t suppress a tiny whimper ( that thankfully, only Azlen would’ve been able to hear). Now that he was safe in his boyfriend’s arms, though, the cat let the tension drain out of his body, resting his head on his shoulder as he softly whispered directions to him. “Make sure they take the boss with us to the base, okay? And try to make any evidence of our presence here disappear—even if they don’t have back-up, I’m sure some citizen’s heard the noise and reported it to the authorities by now,” he murmured, struggling to remain awake.
